Kathmandu, July 31: A special worship has been performed at the Syarvan Monastery at local Raniban today in connection with performing the last rites of the Buddhist guru Shamar Kunzig Rinpoche.
The funeral rites of the 14th Rinpoche are to be carried out today and the special worships were performed in that connection. As part of the special worship, all the antecedent rituals before the funeral were carried out as per the Tibetan Buddhist tradition with the chanting of the Buddhist scriptures.
The worship was performed wishing for peace to the departed soul with the participation of high-ranking Buddhist clerics including the 17th Karmapa who came here from India to attend the 14th Rinpoche’s funeral.
This kind of worship is performed in the belief that the departed soul roams in the ethereal world in this period of the death of a person as per the Tibetan Buddhist belief.
Sarmapa and Karmapa are the different titles of various Buddhist gurus of the Kagyupa order under the Mahayana sect of Buddhism. The Buddist gurus holding any of these titles are required to attend each others’ ascension and the funeral ceremonies.
The devotees regard the late 14th Rinpoche as the 14th Sarmapa and an incarnation of the Amitava Buddha.
The Buddhist guru passed away after suffering a heart attack on June 11 in Germany. He was 62. The body of the Rinpoche, Bhutanese national, was brought to Kathmandu only on Tuesday.
So far, some 130 thousand devotees from within the country and outside including the diplomats from various countries have paid their last respects to the body of the late Rinpoche, according to sources at the Syarvan Monastery.
