Kathmandu, July 30: Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Bhim Prasad Acharya has said the economic agendas and review of old treaties and agreements with India should be matters of discussions during the upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking at an interaction programme organised by the Sambad Club Nepal here today, Minister Acharya underlined the need of reviewing the Nepal-India Treaties of 1950 and 1963 and the agreement during the Indian PM’s visit, focusing on the economic development of both neighbours.
The Power Trade Agreement (PTA) is in the interests of both sides, he said.
Also speaking at the programme, UCPN (Maoist) standing committee member Devendra Poudel argued that equality-based relations between the two countries was essential to develop Nepal-India relations through a new angle.
Nepal and India share common features on religious, cultural, social and economic matters, he said and added that review of old bilateral treaties and agreements and discussions about mutual economic agendas should get space during Modi’s visit.
Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak stated the PTA is in the interest of both countries. Construction of Pancheshwor Hydropower Project and opening of transport route linking the far-western to India is necessary to attain economic progress, he stressed.
Likewise, Rastriya Prajatantra Party general secretary and parliamentary leader Deepak Bohara said the agendas for Modi’s visit should be finalized through an all-party discussion.
Minister Acharya and political leaders present in the programme said visit from the Indian Prime Minister in a gap of 17 years is really welcoming and it should be focused on the review of old treaties, PTA, and discussions on transport and railway services.
